Ian Fray praises David Beckham and says he’s ready to shine with Inter Miami at the Club World Cup

David Beckham’s involvement with his players has left a deep impression inside Inter Miami’s locker room. That’s what 22-year-old defender Ian Fray made clear in an exclusive interview with Mirror US Sports ahead of the club’s debut in the FIFA Club World Cup.

“He’s been here several times and greets everyone in the morning. If you need something, you can ask him. He even gives you his number so you can text him if needed. He’s a great guy,” Fray shared. His words reveal a less publicized side of Beckham-the present, approachable leader who’s invested in every member of the squad, not just stars like Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, or Sergio Busquets.

Beckham was on hand for Inter Miami’s final training session before their opening match against Egyptian Premier League champions Al Ahly FC, scheduled for Saturday, June 14.

Messi and Fray represent two sides of Miami’s ambition

Miami’s goal is clear: compete at the highest level. FIFA President Gianni Infantino even challenged Messi publicly to lead the club to global glory. Since joining the team in 2023, the Argentine has elevated Inter Miami into one of the most valuable football franchises in the world.

But while Messi brings star power and experience, Fray embodies resilience. Promoted from the academy in January 2021, the defender has made 45 first-team appearances, despite battling three ACL injuries and a medial meniscus tear last October.

Still, Fray remains undeterred. “I’m very confident. If I get injured again, I know how to come back. I’ve learned how to take care of my knees. I do everything I can: diet, activation, everything that’s under my control,” he said.

Inter Miami aims to make a statement in its international debut

Inter Miami is part of Group A, alongside elite competition in Al Ahly, Palmeiras, and FC Porto. Although invited last October, the MLS club is not just filling out the bracket. According to Fray, the team has intensified its training with the goal of making an impact.

“We had a really intense week; it’s been extremely hot, but we’re definitely ready,” he said. “Once we found out we were in, even last year, we were excited for this match. Obviously, during the MLS season, we took it game by game, but once we hit Columbus, the focus shifted to this tournament.”

With Beckham on the sidelines, Messi leading on the pitch, and young talents like Fray determined to prove their worth, Inter Miami is out to show the world they belong among the elite.
