In April 1997, Tiger Woods wrote his name in golf’s history books by becoming the youngest golfer to win the Masters at Augusta, where he defeated greats like Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Vijay Singh, and Lee Westwood. Not only was he the youngest winner in the history of the Masters Tournament, but he also secured the victory by the largest margin at Augusta National.
That year, Woods managed to score 18-under par 270, and that win marked the beginning of a great career to come. After recording a bogey on the fifth hole of the final round, the golf legend gifted his ball to a 9-year-old fan, who didn’t let go of the treasure until now.
On March 27, the fan named Julian Nexsen started an auction for a golf ball stamped ‘Tiger’ with an opening bid of $500 on Golden Age Auctions, and the price quickly rose. Golf fans went crazy trying to get their hands on the ball, and the bids eventually reached $64,124 before it was finally sold.
After the incredible bidding war, Golden Age Auctions released a statement saying, “Unless Tiger himself or his caddie, Fluff, intentionally saved a ball from this historic final round (which we doubt), this may be the only confirmed golf ball from the final round of Tiger Woods’ first major championship victory.”
