With the World Baseball Classic wrapped up, all eyes are back on MLB as the 2026 season gets closer and closer. The first game of the season will take place at Oracle Park, where the San Francisco Giants will welcome the New York Yankees in an interleague showdown.
The Yankees are looking to rebound from an ALDS exit at the hands of division rivals the Toronto Blue Jays. The Giants, meanwhile want to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2021. With the game nearing quickly, the teams are finalizing their rosters.
Randal Grichuk makes New York Yankees MLB roster to start 2026 season
A surprising name has been confirmed by Yankees manager Aaron Boone for New York’s opening day roster. Randal Grichuk, who has bounced around four different teams since 2023, has earned himself a bench spot on the team. The news comes shortly after it became known that 23-year-old Jasson Dominguez was being sent down to Triple-A.
Grichuk will serve as the team’s backup outfielder, but it’s fair to wonder how long he will last on the major league roster. The 34-year-old has hit .125 across 16 at-bats during this Spring Training period. Dominguez, on the other hand, hit .325 with three home runs in 40 at-bats.
There’s also the Oswaldo Cabrera situation. Cabrera was sent down to the minor leagues in order to get him more playing time and in rhythm following a devastating ankle fracture last season. Once Cabrera or Dominguez are ready for the big leagues, Grichuk will likely be the first player at risk of going down or getting moved.
