How the Lakers are building a contender: The key addition they still need

The Los Angeles Lakers entered the 2025 NBA offseason with one clear goal in mind: to solidify their roster around their superstar duo of LeBron James and Luka Doncic.

While there were no blockbuster trades or major splashes, the Lakers executed a series of calculated moves that quietly strengthened their title hopes. With both of these stars already leading the charge, the Lakers’ focus shifted toward filling gaps and addressing key needs.

One of the most notable additions was Deandre Ayton. The former No. 1 overall pick’s potential has yet to fully materialize, but in Los Angeles, he could find a home as a powerful interior presence.

Ayton’s ability to dominate in the paint, both offensively and defensively, provides the Lakers with an upgraded frontcourt that could make a significant difference when matched up against other contenders.

Additionally, the Lakers were proactive in upgrading their perimeter shooting. Jake LaRavia, known for his shooting and floor spacing, was added to complement the team’s offensive flow.

They also traded up in the draft to secure Adou Thiero, the No. 36 pick. Thiero, praised for his defensive versatility and athleticism, represents a long-term solution to the Lakers’ need for a more athletic and dynamic wing player. Though Thiero’s impact will take time to develop, his potential as an elite defender is clear, and his acquisition is a move toward a more complete roster.

Perimeter defense: The missing piece

Despite these positive additions, the Lakers still have one glaring need: perimeter defense. The franchise recognized this and has been “actively looking” for a defensive stopper on the wing, an area of weakness the team addressed in Rob Pelinka’s exit interview.

The Lakers’ defense was solid in key moments last season, but a more consistent lockdown defender could elevate the team’s playoff chances.

Free agency may have largely dried up, but there are still a few players worth exploring. De’Anthony Melton stands out as a high-level defender who also offers shooting and playmaking abilities.

Gary Payton II, known for his tenacious defense and championship pedigree, could add the grit Los Angeles needs on the perimeter. Amir Coffey, while not a lockdown defender, offers defensive versatility and high basketball IQ.

On the trade front, the Lakers could explore options like Andrew Wiggins, a player who would immediately boost the team’s defensive capability. While trade talks with teams like the Miami Heat are ongoing, the Lakers’ front office has kept their options open, knowing that the right defensive addition could be the final piece they need.

The Lakers’ offseason strategy was calculated and efficient. By adding Ayton, LaRavia, and Thiero, they’ve made critical moves. But securing a top-tier perimeter defender could be the finishing touch on what is shaping up to be a strong championship push in 2025.
