How signing Kenneth Walker III impacts the Chiefs’ chances of winning Super Bowl LXI

The Kansas City Chiefs have made one of the most intriguing roster moves of the offseason, reportedly agreeing to a lucrative deal with Kenneth Walker III. The signing instantly reshapes expectations for the defending champion Seattle Seahawks and could significantly impact Kansas City‘s pursuit of another championship.

According to multiple sources, Walker has agreed to a three-year, $45 million contract with the Chiefs, making it the largest deal ever awarded to a free-agent running back in league history.

The move signals a clear commitment from Kansas City to improve a rushing attack that struggled throughout the 2025 season, and that investment is already influencing how sportsbooks view the team’s title chances.

At DraftKings Sportsbook, the Chiefs now hold +1400 odds to win Super Bowl LXI, improving from +1500 earlier in the offseason.

Those odds place them tied with the Philadelphia Eagles for the fifth-best championship probability in the NFL.

While Kansas City‘s outlook remains tied closely to the health of franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the addition of Walker could ease the burden on the star passer as he works his way back from a serious knee injury.

Walker’s postseason surge raised his profile

The former second-round pick arrives in Kansas City after an impressive run with the Seattle Seahawks.

Although Walker shared carries with Zach Charbonnet during the 2025 regular season, he still produced 1,027 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

His performance reached another level in the postseason. Across three playoff games, Walker rushed for 313 yards and four touchdowns, culminating in a standout performance during Super Bowl LX.

Against the New England Patriots, Walker delivered a 135-yard performance that helped secure the championship and earned him Super Bowl MVP honors.

At just 25 years old, Walker is entering what many believe could be the prime of his career.

Through his first four seasons in the NFL, he has already recorded two 1,000-yard rushing campaigns and demonstrated an ability to produce explosive plays regardless of offensive scheme.

That playmaking ability was a major factor in Kansas City‘s decision to pursue him aggressively in free agency.

Fixing a major weakness in Kansas City

For several seasons, the Chiefs have relied heavily on Mahomes to generate offense through improvisation and downfield passing.

Their running game, however, has often lagged behind the rest of the unit and last season highlighted that imbalance as they finished with a 6-11 record.

Kansas City averaged just 4.2 yards per carry and finished with the eighth-fewest rushing yards in the NFL. Advanced metrics also painted a modest picture, with the team ranking 15th in EPA per rush.

By adding Walker, the Chiefs hope to finally introduce a true difference-maker in the backfield.

The path to another title will still be challenging. According to odds at DraftKings Sportsbook, the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens currently hold slightly better odds than the Chiefs among teams in the AFC.

Ultimately, Kansas City‘s fortunes will hinge on the recovery of Mahomes following his ACL injury.

If the quarterback returns to form, pairing him with a dynamic runner like Walker could dramatically reshape the offense.
