Shedeur Sanders is emerging as a quiet but significant factor in the Cleveland Browns’ head-coaching search as the team works to fill one of the NFL’s remaining vacancies for the 2026 season.
With the New York Giants reportedly hiring John Harbaugh, eight openings remain across the league, including Cleveland’s, following the Browns’ decision to part ways with Kevin Stefanski.
As the search unfolds, league sources believe uncertainty at quarterback – particularly surrounding Sanders – is shaping how candidates view the job.
The Browns announced Friday they will conduct virtual interviews with Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.
Who is on the Browns’ list of candidates?
Minter, 42, and Scheelhaase, 35, become the seventh and eighth candidates to interview for the Browns’ position. In-person interviews are not permitted until after the divisional round.
Cleveland has already met with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher, Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
Minter joined the Chargers in 2024 and quickly stabilized their defense, while Scheelhaase helped guide a Rams passing attack that ranked in the top 12 nationally in yards and yards per reception.
Both are viewed as rising, younger candidates, though Minter has drawn interest from all nine teams that initially entered the coaching market. Scheelhaase is also expected to interview with the Ravens and Raiders.
Shedeur Sanders is the elephant in the room
With Harbaugh no longer available, Cleveland’s focus has shifted – but the quarterback picture remains unresolved. Around the league, there is growing belief that Sanders’ uncertain standing as the Browns’ long-term answer could influence the final decision.
Insiders noted that before accepting the Giants job, Harbaugh evaluated some quarterback options – none of whom were Sanders – underscoring how quarterback clarity can shape coaching hires.
Cleveland may not fully resolve its quarterback direction before naming its next head coach, but the Sanders question is already playing a role behind the scenes as candidates assess the Browns’ future.
