How Rory McIlroy’s true golf handicap compares to Tiger Woods

Rory McIlroy has reached a new milestone that cements his status among golf’s elite. Despite an up-and-down season, the Northern Irish star has demonstrated the consistency needed to post a handicap comparable to legends like Tiger Woods.

McIlroy set the tone for his season early, opening with a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He shot a 267, 21 under par, with rounds of 66-70-65-66.

In the following weeks, his pace slowed, but he remained steady, finishing T17 at the Genesis Invitational and T15 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. That consistency only made his next triumph more impressive.

McIlroy’s first major of the season came at The Players Championship. Weeks later, he achieved his greatest feat yet-winning the Masters with a 277, 11 under par, and completing his career Grand Slam.

McIlroy’s best handicap yet

Following his Grand Slam victory and a Race to Dubai title, fans and analysts began asking how McIlroy’s current handicap stacks up against other golf icons.

By uploading his scores from this season into the USGA app, the result showed a remarkable +8.7 handicap in GHIN, the system used by recreational golfers.

Since tournaments organized by the PGA and LIV are played to gross score, professional golfers don’t carry official handicaps. However, fans and historians often calculate them for comparison.

Recent estimates suggest Tiger Woods’ best career handicap ranged between +11.1 and +13 during his dominant 2000 season. By contrast, Dustin Johnson averaged around +6.5 between 2016 and 2020.

What is a handicap in golf?

A handicap isn’t simply an average of scores-it’s an estimate of a golfer’s skill level on a standard-difficulty course. It represents the number of strokes under par a player is expected to finish. The lower the number, the better the golfer.

Among professionals, the rules differ slightly. A “+” sign indicates the player finishes under par, and the higher the number, the stronger the performance.

For McIlroy, a +8.7 handicap means he could complete a par-72 course in just 64 strokes. At his peak, Woods’ handicap suggested he could finish the same course in 59 strokes.

This simple number illustrates the enormous gap not only between professionals and amateurs, but also why McIlroy is the dominant force in professional golf right now.
