Although the game has a duration of 60 minutes of effective play, divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each, an American football game usually lasts an average of three hours, due to the pauses in the game, including halftime.
However, a Super Bowl is longer due to many factors, from a longer halftime due to the halftime show, as well as the breaks to take advantage of the hundreds of advertisers who pay millions of dollars to have a commercial space during the game.
Halftime of a regular game is 15 minutes, while in a Super Bowl it lasts 30 minutes, due to the show that is presented.
How long is the Super Bowl?
Super Bowl LVIII was the longest NFL Championship game so far, with an effective game time of 74 minutes and 57 seconds, as the game in which the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 required an additional quarter that lasted 14 minutes and 57 seconds.
However, in terms of duration from the initial kickoff until the game clock is at zero, the longest game was Super Bowl XLVII, when the Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31, although it should be noted that the game had a 34-minute suspension due to a blackout in the same stadium in which the next edition will be played in New Orleans.
It is followed by Super Bowl LVIII between the Chiefs and 49ers with 4:06 hours, while the XXXVIII edition, in which the New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers 32-29 on February 1, 2004, had a total duration of 4:05 hours.
