The Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is given to the best player in the NFL championship game, and has been awarded since the first edition was played in 1967.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr was the first to be named MVP of the then-called World Championship Game; in fact, Starr won the award in the first two editions of the game.

Since Super Bowl XXV, the trophy has been named after former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle.

How is the Super Bowl MVP selected?

The choice of the Super Bowl MVP is made through a vote, in which both fans and the media can participate, although they do not have the same weight.

The NFL carefully selects 16 members of the media who cover the game to cast an MVP ballot, and that select group accounts for 80 percent of the vote. The other 20 percent comes from the fans, who can vote online.

The MVP votes are received before the last two minutes of the fourth quarter of that game

“We are in contact with the panel during the fourth quarter with the game in progress, the media will wait until the Super Bowl winner is defined before giving us the final vote,” the NFL said in a statement.

“There is no strict deadline. If voters want to wait until immediately after the game is over, that’s fine,” the league added.

It is no surprise that the quarterback position is the most successful over the previous 59 editions with 34; behind the passers, the award has been won eight times by receivers, seven times by running backs, four times by linebackers, two times by defensive ends, two times by safeties, and with one are cornerbacks, defensive tackles and a kick returner.
