How did Tyrrell Hatton celebrate qualifying for Europe’s Ryder Cup team?

Tyrrell Hatton has provided an unusually candid account of the night he marked his confirmation for Europe’s Ryder Cup team, recalling heavy celebrations that resulted in damage to a hotel room and a difficult flight the following morning.

The Englishman received a call from European captain Luke Donald last month to confirm his automatic qualification for the upcoming contest at Bethpage Black. Speaking this week at Wentworth ahead of the BMW PGA Championship, Hatton described how the moment led to a lengthy night of drinking in Indianapolis with his LIV Golf colleague and fellow Ryder Cup player Jon Rahm.

Hatton explained that the celebrations included multiple types of alcohol, beginning with wine before moving on to cocktails, including Disaronno Sours ordered at Rahm’s request. Other drinks followed, and at one point Hatton admitted to briefly falling asleep at the table.

He later returned to his hotel room, where he collapsed onto the bed. The following morning he discovered he had been sick in his sleep, forcing him to clean up before leaving for his flight.

The 32-year-old said he stripped the bed, left money and a note of apology for hotel staff, and contacted his wife in a panic about how to handle the situation. He also confirmed that the incident required him to cover the cost of the damaged bed. Hatton reflected that while the night had been intended as a celebration, the aftermath was far less enjoyable and not an experience he wished to repeat.

Europe prepare for tough challenge in New York

Hatton’s recollections were delivered in the build-up to Europe’s next major team competition, which will take place in two weeks’ time. The Ryder Cup has proved difficult for visiting teams in recent editions, with the home side prevailing in each of the last five contests, often by substantial margins.

This year’s event at Bethpage Black is expected to be particularly challenging for Donald’s team, with a large and vocal American crowd anticipated. The contest will also take place against the backdrop of additional security considerations after confirmation tha U.S. President Donald Trump intends to attend on the opening day.

Trump’s appearance at the U.S. Open tennis final last week caused significant delays due to security measures, raising concerns that the Ryder Cup could face similar issues. Donald acknowledged the potential impact and said the PGA of America is coordinating arrangements to minimize disruption.

“We understand that he is coming,” Donald stated.

“There are processes involved with a presidential visit, but the responsibility lies with the organizers to ensure everything runs smoothly.”

The captain added that his squad is preparing for a difficult environment regardless of external factors.

“The atmosphere will be intense,” Donald added.

“The players know they are facing a strong American team, and the crowd will be highly engaged.”

For Hatton, whose competitiveness is well established, the Ryder Cup offers another opportunity to channel his energy on one of golf’s most demanding stages. Europe’s prospects will depend on maintaining focus under pressure, with Hatton expected to play a key role in the team’s attempt to overturn recent history.
