How did Luka Doncic react to the Los Angeles Lakers completing the signing of DeAndre Ayton?

The Los Angeles Lakers made a decisive move to strengthen their championship pursuit by signing 7-foot center DeAndre Ayton to a two-year, $16.6 million contract this past Wednesday.

This addition addresses one of last season’s biggest shortcomings-the team’s lack of a dominant physical presence around the rim.

While the Lakers‘ blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas and brought superstar Luka Doncic to L.A. was the headline of the NBA offseason, it didn’t quite solve every problem.

The team’s first-round exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves revealed the need for more size and toughness inside the paint.

Ayton’s Role in the Lakers’ Championship Equation

DeAndre Ayton, the 2018 No. 1 overall draft pick selected just ahead of Doncic, brings a skill set the Lakers desperately needed. Though his accolades don’t match Doncic‘s-who has earned five All-Star selections, Rookie of the Year honors, first-team All-NBA recognition, and an NBA Finals appearance-Ayton‘s impact in the paint is substantial.

Known for his rebounding prowess, rim protection, and efficient scoring near the basket, Ayton adds the physicality and presence that can help the Lakers compete against elite frontcourts. His arrival complements Doncic‘s perimeter mastery and opens up opportunities for other stars, including LeBron James, to flourish.

According to The Athletic’s Dan Woike, Doncic is enthusiastic about playing alongside Ayton.

“Doncic, according to league sources, is excited about the opportunity to play with Ayton,” Woike reported. Ayton‘s own admiration for Doncic is well-documented-he once called Doncic a player “making history, breaking history and just being great” during an interview on ESPN’s “The Jump.”

Having two of the top three picks from the 2018 draft on one roster is a rare advantage for the Lakers. It shows their intent to blend youthful talent with veteran leadership as they aim for a deep playoff run.

The Lakers‘ previous lack of a true interior enforcer left them vulnerable in critical moments last season. Ayton’s signing remedies that, giving the team a player who can control rebounds, protect the rim, and provide reliable scoring inside. This allows Doncic and James more freedom on the perimeter, potentially making the offense more dynamic.

Though questions remain about contract extensions for Doncic and the future of LeBron James in Los Angeles, the acquisition of Ayton signals the franchise’s serious commitment to building a championship contender. With their star trio now in place, the Lakers are poised to challenge the league’s best teams and aim for NBA Finals glory.

The upcoming season will test how well this talented core meshes, but with Ayton anchoring the paint alongside Doncic and James, Los Angeles has crafted a roster that demands respect-and hope-from its fans.
