How Chiefs can secure a Rashee Rice backup plan for Patrick Mahomes with sliding NFL Draft wide receiver

Following a truly disappointing season where they went 6-11, the Kansas City Chiefs put together an offseason plan that came with mixed reviews.

One one hand, they brought in Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker and some nice additional pieces, but they also lost a chunk of their secondary, including standout cornerback Trent McDuffie. The team was also dealt a bit of a shock, as Rashee Rice was once again involved in a potential legal issue.

Clearly, the team wasn’t too concerned with that aspect, as they didn’t sign any wide receivers in free agency. That doesn’t mean when they won’t make any additions at the position, though, with the 2026 NFL Draft still to come. Given that the Chiefs have two first round picks now, they can potentially add a very solid wideout for Patrick Mahomes to work with.

Jordyn Tyson could fall to back half of first round according to new report

As it turns out, they might be able to get a wide receiver who was once projected to be a Top 5 pick in this draft. Rumors surfaced this week that Arizona State wideout Jordyn Tyson is sliding down draft boards due to a concerning injury history.

It would have to be a substantial slide for Tyson to make it to the Chiefs’ second first round selection. The Los Angeles Rams pick that the Chiefs now own sits at 29th overall. There are several teams in front of Kansas City who would likely take the chance on a player of Tyson’s caliber, despite the concerns.

But if Tyson does indeed start sliding on draft night, it will be tough for the Chiefs’ front office to not consider a trade-up to get him. Tyson would pair extremely well with Xavier Worthy, and would form a fantastic trio with Rice as well – or be Rice insurance if he’s unable to play for any reason in the future.
