How Brian Schottenheimer nearly joining the Jets could have altered his Dallas Cowboys tenure

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up to face the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, aiming to secure a key victory. In a surprising revelation ahead of the game, Brian Schottenheimer admitted that he nearly accepted the Jets’ head coaching job, a decision that could have dramatically altered the Cowboys’ current situation.

This decision could have significantly impacted the direction of the Dallas Cowboys, as Schottenheimer might have chosen to lead a different team. Had he accepted the Jets’ offer, the Cowboys’ strategies, roster decisions, and overall trajectory for the 2025 season could have looked completely different, highlighting just how pivotal coaching choices can be in the NFL.

For now, the Dallas Cowboys are focused on the current season, holding a 1-2-1 record with their lone victory coming against the New York Giants. Meanwhile, the New York Jets remain winless, suffering four consecutive defeats as they try to rebound. Despite the team’s ups and downs, Brian Schottenheimer remains firmly in charge, guiding the Cowboys through the early challenges of the 2025 season.

The untold story of Brian Schottenheimer almost taking the Jets job

In an interview ahead of the game against the New York Jets, Brian Schottenheimer revealed that long before joining the Dallas Cowboys as a coaching analyst, he was on the verge of becoming the Jets’ head coach.

The revelation highlights a pivotal moment that could have dramatically altered Schottenheimer’s career and the trajectory of both teams. He discussed the situation in detail while appearing on the 105.3 The Fan show, recounting how the opportunity arose shortly after Eric Mangini departed from the Jets’ head coaching position.

“When they moved on from Eric Mangini, I ended up interviewing for the job. I’d been there a couple of years, and the offense was doing well. I ended up coming in second to Rex Ryan,” Brian Schottenheimer admitted, reflecting on the possibility of becoming the Jets’ head coach.

In the same interview, the current Cowboys head coach reflected on his tenure in New York under Rex Ryan. “I love my time in New York. We had a lot of success… back-to-back AFC Championship games. We took Mark Sanchez in his rookie and second years, won several playoff games on the road, and had a talented team. We played hard,” Schottenheimer said, highlighting the memorable moments of his Jets career.

Brian Schottenheimer’s Success as Offensive Coordinator with the New York Jets

It’s worth noting that Brian Schottenheimer enjoyed a lengthy tenure with the Jets, serving as offensive coordinator for six seasons-a point he highlighted in interviews. “I laughed this week, somebody asked me, and I said, ‘I think I’m the longest-tenured offensive coordinator in Jets history since the merger or whatever,'” Schottenheimer recalled, emphasizing his lasting impact on the franchise.

He even joked about his long tenure, saying, “What I said is, ‘Six years as the OC in New York with the Jets is like dog years. So, I claim I was there for 42 years, call and play,'” concluded Brian Schottenheimer, highlighting both his humor and his time with the franchise.

The game scheduled for next Sunday presents a perfect opportunity for the Dallas Cowboys to make a statement. What could have been Brian Schottenheimer’s first head coaching experience in the NFL with another team never materialized, and now he is leading the Cowboys, aiming to prove his leadership on the field.
