Billy Horschel claimed his second BMW PGA Championship title on Sunday, winning a dramatic playoff at the DP World Tour event at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, UK.
The 37-year-old American outlasted South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy to secure his 11th professional victory and his fourth title on the DP World Tour.
Horschel, who first won this tournament in 2021, delivered a steady performance throughout the competition.
After four rounds, he, Lawrence, and McIlroy all finished tied at 268 strokes, 20 under par. Horschel’s final push included consecutive birdies on the last two holes, while McIlroy forced the playoff with an eagle on the 17th hole.
Horschel outlasts McIlroy and Lawrence in tense playoff
The three-man playoff began with Lawrence falling out of contention early after making a bogey on the first extra hole, while Horschel and McIlroy both made par.
On the second playoff hole, Horschel made a decisive eagle, claiming the victory. For McIlroy, this marked another near-miss, having come up short in the Irish Open the week before, where Denmark’s Rasmus Højgaard edged him out.
McIlroy‘s strong performance in the BMW PGA Championship once again showcased his consistency, but the Northern Irishman was left to reflect on two back-to-back narrow defeats.
Several Spanish golfers also put on solid performances at the tournament. Adrián Otaegui led the Spanish contingent, finishing at 11 under par after an impressive final round of 66 (-6).
Jorge Campillo followed at -6, while Adri Arnaus and Alejandro del Rey both ended at -4. Angel Hidalgo, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, and Nacho Elvira rounded out the Spanish players, with scores of -3, -2, and even par, respectively.
Horschel‘s victory at Wentworth solidifies his reputation as a tough competitor, especially in high-pressure situations.
His second win at the BMW PGA Championship adds another notable achievement to his career, as he continues to excel on the DP World Tour.
