For Hendon Hooker, this new chapter in the NFL brings him back to Tennessee but not as the quarterback who once excited Tennessee Volunteers football fans. He now returns as a player still trying to find his place in the league, after a much more unstable path than he and many others expected. The Tennessee Titans have agreed to sign him as a free agent, in a move that may seem minor from the outside, but for Hooker it essentially means returning to the place where his career once made the most sense.
Hooker’s NFL story began with real expectations. The Detroit Lions selected him with the 68th overall pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, even knowing he was recovering from a torn ACL suffered at the end of his college career. Shortly after, he signed his rookie contract, and in July of that same year he was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list while continuing his rehab. More than an immediate option, Hooker was seen as a long-term investment.
Detroit activated him to the main roster in December 2023, although his true regular-season debut didn’t come until October 13, 2024, when he appeared in the Lions’ win over the Dallas Cowboys. In total, Hooker appeared in just three regular-season games with Detroit, completing 6 of 9 passes for 62 yards. That stat line sums up his early professional start quite well: very few opportunities, little room to settle in, and still not enough of a sample to truly evaluate what he could offer.
After that, his career began to move quickly without much stability. The Lions waived him on August 25, 2025, during final roster cuts. Days later, he joined the Carolina Panthers practice squad, and later finished 2025 with the New York Jets, first on the practice squad and then on the active roster in January 2026. In less than a year, Hooker went from being a third-round pick with potential to a quarterback trying to stay afloat from one opportunity to the next.
Going back is familiar. Proving it again is something else
That’s why this return to Tennessee carries a different weight. His best version is still tied to Knoxville, where in 2022 he was one of the most efficient quarterbacks in college football, throwing for 3,135 yards, 27 touchdowns, and just two interceptions, earning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors. That was the stage where Hooker played with authority, rhythm, and confidence. Signing with the Titans doesn’t automatically take him back to that level, but it does place him once again in an environment where his name still carries memory and expectation and perhaps motivation.
Tennessee’s quarterback room is crowded, with Cam Ward leading the group and names like Mitchell Trubisky and Will Levis also in the mix. Hooker doesn’t arrive as a favorite or an immediate solution. Instead, he arrives with a quiet, low-risk opportunity for the team but one that could carry real personal meaning for him. Because at this stage, more than returning home, what Hooker needs is to prove he can still build something in the NFL.
