“He hasn’t played!”: Former scout says Arch Manning must be the next Andrew Luck

A former NFL scout has sounded the alarm on Texas quarterback Arch Manning, cautioning that anything less than a superstar performance in 2025 may be perceived as a let down.

Manning, one of college football’s most hyped athletes, has yet to even reach 100 career pass attempts, yet is already tabbed as the likely No. 1 pick in next year’s draft.

At SEC Media Days in Atlanta, the young signal-caller fielded questions with quiet poise.

Through just 63 completions on 95 attempts, his numbers, 969 yards, nine touchdowns, and a 179.0 passer rating, look sharp on paper. Still, his limited in-game sample has many analysts craving more proof.

Expectations versus reality

John Middlekauf, a former NFL talent evaluator, believes the current frenzy surrounding Manning could backfire.

“The hype train is kind of out of control … Unless he answers the hype train, and is like Andrew Luck immediately, I don’t know how he lives up to it. If he is just like a solid NFL prospect this year, it’s going to feel very disappointing.

“Because the hype train behind him is like he’s LeBron James or Tiger Woods. Which happens very, very rarely.”

Middlekauf draws a compelling parallel: while icons like LeBron and Tiger already had standout achievements in high school, LeBron’s mixtape and Woods’s amateur circuit dominance, Manning has barely scratched the surface in college.

“This guy hasn’t played! And we know how difficult the SEC is,” the scout added. “I’m excited to watch him, I’m pro-Arch Manning. But I do agree that it’s gonna be hard for him to live up to the hype. I really believe that. … It’s gonna be the biggest story by far in college football.”

Despite the high stakes on the field, Manning has largely kept things tame off it. He’s inked only a few name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, with brands like Panini, EA Sports, and Red Bull, yet still tops On3’s NIL valuation list at $6.8 million, up from $6.6 million just months ago

Along with his individual financial surge, Texas is riding a wave of positivity heading into the next season. SEC media attendees recently pegged the Longhorns as favorites to win the conference, an added layer of pressure for a program hungry for dominance.

A legacy to live up to

It’s no surprise that Manning is under the spotlight. He is the latest heir to football royalty, the Manning dynasty, which began with Archie Manning, surged with Peyton and Eli, and now finds its third-generation signal-caller at Texas. But legacy only takes you so far in a conference as unforgiving as the SEC.

Manning‘s family pedigree certainly brings advantages, coaching, genetics, and insights. Still, never before has a Manning stepped onto the field with this level of expectation before even accumulating substantial playing time.
