He has only lost once against the Broncos, but Patrick Mahomes could be in for a nightmare next Sunday

The haters of the Kansas City Chiefs might be very happy right now, because if the NFL playoffs started at this moment, Patrick Mahomes and company would not be among the Super Bowl contenders. That’s how worrying the situation they’re going through is – they’re in eighth place in the AFC standings with a 5-4 record that perfectly reflects the harsh reality of their present.

Even so, we can still say they remain one of the most feared teams in the league and even favorites to reach Super Bowl Sunday and win it.

A crucial week for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs

This week could be described as one of the toughest, as they face a team on a seven-game winning streak – and they’re essentially playing for their entire season (and it will be like this from here on out).

There’s no doubt it’s a very dangerous opponent, and this Wednesday, ESPN analyst Field Yates explained why, while also detailing what Mahomes must do to overcome his divisional rivals.

“You might see his career stats against the Broncos and see 13 wins in 14 games for the Chiefs… but Mahomes has only accounted for 20 passing touchdowns in those 14 games.”

The Kansas City Chiefs have a 13-1 record against the Denver Broncos with Patrick Mahomes as the starter, dating back to his second season in the NFL. Still, Yates pointed out why this season presents a different challenge.

“They have been good on defense for the last few seasons. But I think this is the best version of the Broncos’ defense.”

“The Broncos defense is as good as it gets in the red zone… they allow the third fewest trips to the red zone this season. No team has held opponents to field goals, turnovers, or turnover on downs at a higher percentage once inside the red zone. They really tighten the screws when you get there.”

Throughout his career, Patrick Mahomes has thrown 20 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions against the Denver Broncos. While that 2-to-1 ratio may look solid, it’s not enough against such a disciplined defense.

Mahomes is tied with Steve Young (13-1 against the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams) for the best winning percentage in NFL history against a single opponent, among quarterbacks with at least 14 starts.
