Harbaugh accused in shocking photo theft lawsuit involving 150,000 student-athletes

Jim Harbaugh is back in the spotlight-for all the wrong reasons. After signing with the Los Angeles Chargers, the former University of Michigan coach thought his controversies were behind him. However, a recent lawsuit has once again placed him in the crosshairs of authorities, threatening both his reputation and the legacy he left with the Wolverines.

In mid-2024, just months after joining the Chargers, Harbaugh was hit with a four-year show-cause penalty for violating NCAA recruiting rules. That penalty, along with his return to the NFL, appeared to signal the end of a scandal that had overshadowed Michigan’s 2023 national championship victory.

But Harbaugh’s past has caught up to him again-like a linebacker flattening a running back trying to break free.

New legal trouble emerges for Harbaugh

According to Essentially Sports, a class-action lawsuit filed against the University of Michigan has officially added Harbaugh to the list of defendants. The case alleges identity theft and unauthorized computer access used to steal intimate photos of nearly 150,000 student-athletes from over 100 universities.

The investigation dates back to December 2022, when assistant defensive coordinator Matt Weiss was caught accessing confidential data across multiple campuses. Plaintiffs allege that Michigan, and Harbaugh himself, waited nearly a month to fire Weiss-even after being made aware of the allegations.

“Had Harbaugh implemented basic oversight of his staff, plaintiffs and the class would have been protected against predators such as Weiss,” said Parker Stinar, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs. The lawsuit also names athletic director Warde Manuel and former university president Santa Ono.

Did Michigan delay action for football glory?

The lawsuit further claims that Michigan held off on firing Weiss until after the 2022 Fiesta Bowl against the TCU Horned Frogs. “The university’s delay in taking meaningful protective action until after a high-stakes game sends a clear message: Student welfare was secondary.”

Harbaugh has yet to comment publicly on the lawsuit. At the time of the incident, the university maintained it acted promptly once aware of Weiss’s misconduct.

While it remains too soon to predict the lawsuit’s trajectory, one thing is clear: this case threatens to leave another blemish on Jim Harbaugh’s already controversial record.
