This weekend was a special one for the sport of boxing. On Friday night, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano culminated their epic trilogy. One day later, a stacked card featured Shakur Stevenson, Subriel Matias and Hamzah Sheeraz coming out victorious. The latter stole the night, though, crushing Edgar Berlanga and knocking him out in the fifth round.
In a way, Sheeraz exposed Berlanga. Many have felt that Berlanga is simply not a talented boxer, which made Canelo Alvarez’s win over him on points somewhat underwhelming. Given their common opponent, the idea of Sheeraz fighting Canelo is now on the table. After his win over Berlanga, Sheeraz addressed the possibility, while also giving tons of respect for one of his boxing heroes.
Hamzah Sheeraz says he wouldn’t run away from Canelo Alvarez in potential fight
When talking about a potential fight against Alvarez, Sheeraz made sure to claim that he would be gunning for the knockout. In a way, he was sending one more subtle shot at Berlanga, who fans feel didn’t even attempt to go toe-to-toe with Canelo.
“Canelo has always been a boxing hero of mine. Even for my name to be mentioned in the same sentence as his, that’s a great achievement for myself. But listen, if I do get the opportunity to fight him, it won’t be one of those where I try to nick it on points. I will stand in the middle with him and have it out. Whoever lands first, I suppose they’ll get knocked out, won’t they?“
Whether that actually comes to fruition or not is yet to be seen, although fans don’t believe Canelo will be willing to take that risk given how dangerous Sheeraz is.
There’s also quite a large mismatch advantage when it comes to size and fighting styles. Sheeraz is eight inches taller than Canelo and has a large reach advantage. In reality, it wouldn’t make that much sense for Alvarez, who has already avoided the similarly sized David Benavidez. But anything is possible.
