Greg Olsen accuses Travis Kelce of playing the victim by blaming his off-field fame for his problems with the Chiefs

Travis Kelce has long been one of the NFL’s most dominant tight ends, yet even the Chiefs star has not been immune to the pressures of his own extraordinary success, something Greg Olsen claims he is a victim of.

As he heads into his 13th season, questions about the 35-year-old’s longevity have intensified, especially following two consecutive years where his statistics dipped from historically elite levels.

For the three-time Super Bowl champion, balancing a demanding NFL career with Hollywood appearances, business ventures, and a high-profile personal life has proven challenging.

Yet Olsen, an ex-NFL tight end himself, believes Kelce is not declining as much as fans perceive; instead, he is “a victim of his own success” for setting such a high bar for years on end.

“You know, I think he ended his streak of a thousand yards at seven,” Olsen said. “It was unheard of for guys to go that level of consistency year in and year out.

“So then all of a sudden you don’t get a thousand yards a couple seasons in a row and people lose their minds.”

Kelce still has burning fire to win one more Super Bowl

Kelce‘s 2024 season reflected the challenges of maintaining that high standard as his body ages. After posting 984 receiving yards in 2023, just short of his 1000-yard streak, his output further dipped to 823 yards and three touchdowns in the regular season.

The postseason also saw a relative decline, with only 13 catches for 175 yards across three games, which for a player who has repeatedly turned in clutch playoff performances, was notable and led to concerns about his mentality and physicality.

Yet Kelce‘s influence remains undeniable and he is adamant he’s ready to win another Super Bowl as he also embraces opportunities in entertainment, hosting Saturday Night Live, appearing in FX’s Grotesquerie, and taking a role in Happy Gilmore 2.

“We have created this machine that, when you do it the right way, it works, and you get to win football games because of it,” Kelce said of the Kansas City Chiefs. “And I think that alone gives you the excitement that what we’re doing here is special.

So, despite distractions, his competitive fire is intact but his challenge now is maintaining elite performance while managing a multifaceted life, and as Olsen and others note, the difficulty lies in the impossible expectations he has set for himself.

The Chiefs will open their campaign against the Los Angeles Chargers on September 5 in Brazil, and are looking to prove their dynasty isn’t over after a brutal 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX in February.

With Patrick Mahomes at the helm and Kelce determined to prove his critics wrong, Andy Reid‘s team could find themselves bursting to the front of the NFL scene once again.
