Goodbye Mets? Red Sox go for Pete Alonso with ‘monster’ offer

After a back-and-forth in the final negotiations, Pete Alonso rejected the offer made by the Mets to return to the team. As a free agent, the player is in a position to listen to the best offers this offseason. Will Boston Red Sox be the most attractive at the end of the market?

A couple of weeks ago it was reported that the New York franchise’s maximum offer consisted of a two-year contract plus an option valued at approximately $30 million per year. The proposal was not well received by Alonso, who deserves to earn more and because other teams interested in him were offering higher figures.

The Mets have a low payroll that does not fit the demands of their star hitter, so they are resigned to see him leave for next season. Alonso’s cycle with the organization seems to have come to an end, a conclusion that seems closer because of the strength of Boston’s counterattack to bid for his services.

The Red Sox are aware that Pete turned down the deal New York was seeking, so they are preparing a “monster” offer that will convince him to sign with the team to be their star hitter in the 2026 campaign.

The news comes as a shock to the fans. New York fans have expressed themselves on social media in recent days for him to remain with the organization. He is one of their favorites, but they understand that the best thing for him is to move on to a new destination.

Alonso, the Red Sox’s target

A couple of weeks ago it was reported that Boston’s payroll to lure Alonso is around $127.1 million, and they want to lure Pete Alonso. Rumors indicate that in these 15 days it increased to $140 million for five years. This freedom in their budget gives them an advantage over the other three teams interested in the Mets baseball player

As a free agent, Alonso is attractive because he hit 38 home runs, drove in 126 runs and posted a .524 slugging percentage over a full season. Those numbers are very appealing when considering free agents like him.

The teams looking for Pete

Boston is not the only franchise interested in signing Alonso. The list of suitors who want to sign him has grown over the last two weeks. There was not much talk about them because they were waiting to see what happened with the negotiations with New York

Now that Pete has reaffirmed his intention to be a free agent to listen to offers, the Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays and Cincinnati Reds will be vying for his services. They will fight with the Red Sox to convince him. These three teams are also preparing the pen and checkbook to sign a juicy contract with the hitter. The Los Angeles Angels would be the weakest in terms of budget, because they would not have the capital to match the $127.1 million offered by Boston.
