The 2025 NFL Draft was full of surprises, but few were as eye-catching as the fall of Shedeur Sanders. The Colorado quarterback, who many projected as a first-round pick, had to wait until the fifth round to hear his name called, eventually being selected by the Cleveland Browns.
Now, just a few weeks after his unexpected fall, his future could take another turn. According to several reports in the United States, the Detroit Lions are interested in acquiring the young quarterback in a move that would include quarterback Hendon Hooker and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
A trade that would benefit both parties
Detroit has built one of the strongest rosters in the league, but its situation at backup quarterback remains questionable. Last year, they had to turn to retired Teddy Bridgewater during the playoffs to shore up the position, reflecting the lack of confidence in Hooker or Kyle Allen as relievers for Jared Goff.
With Sanders, the Lions would add young talent to mold behind Goff with an eye to the future. The Browns, meanwhile, have a quarterback ‘overbooking’, which complicates immediate development opportunities for the former Colorado player. In Cleveland, Hooker could find a more conducive environment to continue his growth under the tutelage of a patient and youth-focused staff.
New destination for Sanders?
Although there is no agreement yet, it seems that Shedeur Sanders could change teams before even making his NFL debut. Detroit would look to secure a quarterback with projection, while Cleveland would optimize its depth at a critical position.
The next few days will be key to determining whether one of the most high-profile names in the last draft class will have a new home in Detroit.
