Golden State Warriors eye move for NBA champion after playoffs heartbreak

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly setting their sights on the Boston Celtics guard, Derrick White, as a potential trade target heading into the NBA offseason, following their heartbreak against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Golden State’s season ended in disappointing fashion with a 4-1 series defeat in the Western Conference semifinals as the team proved unable to step up in the absence of the injured Steph Curry.

As a result of the early playoff elimination there is growing speculation that the team may seek roster changes to support their iconic four-time champion after Jimmy Butler proved unable to bring the heat the Warriors needed.

In his absence, forward Jonathan Kuminga stepped up and posted commendable numbers, but his skill set overlaps heavily with other Warriors forwards and lacks the perimeter shooting necessary to stretch defenses, something Steph excels at.

So, the offense stagnated without their leading scorer, who averaged 24.5 points per game, as they lost every single contest after winning the opener without the penetration they needed.

That’s why, ccording to a report from The Ringer’s Logan Murdock, White could be on Golden State’s radar this summer, who was a standout performer for the Celtics during their playoffs run, averaging 20.1 points per game in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

He also showcased his defensive versatility, but most importantly his three-point shooting as he providing backcourt support both offensively and defensively to his team.

White’s skill set would complement Curry well and his perimeter shooting would also restore much-needed spacing for Steve Kerr‘s side, who have traditionally thrived with dynamic ball movement and outside shooting.

Could the Celtics trade White?

Boston could be open to discussions, especially with financial considerations looming under new ownership as they find themselves at risk of penalties for being too far above the luxury tax threshold.

That could see them forced to pay extra money that the owners won’t be keen to part ways with, whilst they could also be blocked from making trades. Additionally, Jayson Tatum likely to miss significant time next season due to injury, the Celtics may look to recalibrate their roster.

Golden State could exploit this opportunity, potentially using Kuminga in a sign-and-trade scenario to acquire White, as they aim to remain competitive in the latter stages of Curry‘s career and hopefully sign off the 36-year-old with one more NBA championship at the Chase Center.

Either way, their season has come to a close in 2024/25. The Timberwolves move on to face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, May 20 in the Western Conference Fianls, whilst the New York Knicks take on the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals on May 21.

The winners will meet in the NBA Finals, which are due to begin with Game 1 on Thursday, June 5. With the Celtics out, a new champion will be crowned no matter what.
