The New York Giants may be preparing to rewrite history – or repeat it. NFL insider Mike Garafolo recently floated a provocative idea during a Good Morning Football appearance: that the Giants should select Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Though Garafolo emphasized that this was his personal opinion and not a report, the statement still shook fans. In a class stacked with high-impact prospects like Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, and Abdul Carter, suggesting a running back at No. 3 immediately brings back memories of Saquon Barkley’s controversial selection in 2018.
Ashton Jeanty’s rise changes the conversation
Jeanty has quickly climbed draft boards thanks to his dynamic playmaking ability. He’s explosive, versatile, and built for the modern NFL, a true three-down back who can catch, block, and break long runs. According to Garafolo, Jeanty is no longer seen as just a top-10 pick, but potentially worthy of top-five status.
That kind of praise is rare for a running back in today’s game, where the position has been largely devalued. Still, Jeanty’s upside is hard to ignore, and in New York, star power matters. “You’d get your popular player right back,” Garafolo said. “He’d have an impact.”
Flashy move or front office fiasco?
Selecting Jeanty at No. 3 would almost certainly ignite backlash. After all, the Giants are still trying to recover from Barkley’s disappointing tenure, not because of his talent, but due to injury setbacks, contract headaches, and positional value. Drafting another back that early could signal desperation more than strategy.
And yet, there’s a case to be made. Jeanty could transform a stagnant offense and give the Giants the kind of highlight-reel playmaker they’ve been missing. But if he doesn’t perform like a superstar right away, the front office, especially GM Joe Schoen, could face intense criticism.
