Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Knicks: Bucks fuel blockbuster NBA trade rumors with $220M replacement lined up

A growing cloud of uncertainty has shrouded Milwaukee’s future as speculation mounts that the Bucks may move their superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Rumblings suggest that a blockbuster trade to the New York Knicks could be on the table, with reports indicating that the franchise already has a $220 million replacement lined up in Karl-Anthony Towns.

Recent developments have intensified rumors of Giannis seeking a fresh start. An insider told Sports Illustrated that Antetokounmpo “likely won’t finish his career in Milwaukee,” citing doubts about the team’s ability to build a championship-caliber roster around him.

The pressure now lies with the Bucks’ front office to convince Giannis that contention is still within reach. If not, they could be open to a trade with the Knicks that will see new names arrive – and one of them could be Towns.

The Bucks’ strategic pivot

The Bucks’ urgency to retain their franchise cornerstone has manifested in bold financial decisions. In the wake of Damian Lillard’s season-ending Achilles injury, the front office cut ties with his bloated deal and moved to restructure the roster.

They brought in Myles Turner on a four-year, $107 million contract to reinforce the interior. But the centerpiece of their long-term vision appears to be Karl-Anthony Towns, who signed a $220 million extension with the Knicks and is widely seen as a potential successor if Giannis decides to force his way out.

Pairing Towns’ scoring and floor-spacing ability with the Bucks’ remaining core offers a blueprint for life after Giannis. Yet many around the league believe the move only signals that Milwaukee is hedging against the possibility of their star walking away.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is not only the Bucks’ crown jewel but one of the NBA’s most decorated talents. A two-time MVP, NBA champion, Finals MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and nine-time All-Star, he secured his legacy by leading Milwaukee to its first title since 1971.

Why the Knicks makes sense for Giannis

But with three straight first-round playoff exits and an aging, cap-strapped roster, the cracks are beginning to show. The Knicks have long been floated as one of the likeliest landing spots should Antetokounmpo demand a trade. Their mix of young talent, draft capital, and star-driven ambitions makes them an attractive partner.

Sportsbooks currently list the Brooklyn Nets with the shortest odds, but New York remains firmly in the conversation. Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs have also surfaced in rumors, with a scenario that could pair Giannis alongside rising phenom Victor Wembanyama.

The stakes could not be higher. If Milwaukee parts ways with its franchise cornerstone, the presence of Karl-Anthony Towns on a similar $220 million deal could soften the blow-but it would also mark the end of an era.

The Bucks’ decision in the coming months will not only determine their own trajectory but could reshape the balance of power across the NBA.
