Giannis Antetokounmpo to New York? Knicks icon John Starks addresses trade buzz

Trade speculation surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo continues to build ahead of the NBA offseason, but New York Knicks legend John Starks believes a blockbuster move to Madison Square Garden is unlikely.

Speaking on the Front Office Sports podcast, Starks dismissed rumors linking the two-time MVP to New York, emphasizing Antetokounmpo’s loyalty to the Milwaukee Bucks.

“Giannis is not coming. He’s not coming,” Starks said, noting that the superstar forward has historically prioritized stability and commitment over chasing new markets.

Starks pointed to Antetokounmpo’s decision to remain in Milwaukee before delivering the franchise an NBA championship as evidence he is unlikely to force a move now.

Loyalty to Milwaukee shapes Starks’ prediction

According to Starks, that loyalty remains a defining trait of the 31-year-old star, who previously resisted opportunities to leave the Bucks during earlier stages of his career.

While acknowledging New York’s appeal, he suggested winning expectations and intense scrutiny make the market uniquely demanding.

“New York is the greatest city when you win,” Starks said, adding that struggles can quickly turn the environment difficult for players despite the franchise’s renewed stability under team president Leon Rose and the front office.

Even if interest exists, a deal would be difficult to structure. Milwaukee is reportedly seeking blue-chip young talent and significant draft compensation – assets the New York Knicks may struggle to assemble.

Trade hurdles complicate Knicks pursuit

Matching Antetokounmpo’s $54.1 million salary would likely require major roster reshuffling involving high-salary players or multiple contracts, along with future draft picks. Any agreement would also depend on competing offers from other teams.

Analysts remain divided on the pursuit. While some believe pairing Antetokounmpo with star guard Jalen Brunson could instantly make New York a title contender, others – including sportswriter Bill Simmons – have warned teams to weigh concerns about age and recent knee injury issues.

For now, Starks’ stance reflects skepticism from within the Knicks’ own history: despite persistent rumors, a Giannis-to-New York blockbuster may remain more fantasy than reality as the offseason approaches.
