Giannis Antetokounmpo jokes his 4-year-old will dunk on Victor Wembanyama

Giannis Antetokounmpo was not in uniform, but he still managed to grab attention.

The Milwaukee Bucks star attended NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles while recovering from a calf injury that kept him out of game action. During the festivities, he shared a playful exchange with his four-year-old son that quickly made waves across the league.

In a lighthearted moment captured by the NBA’s official account, Antetokounmpo told his son: “So at 19, you’re gonna get drafted, and then you’re gonna be Rookie of the Year, and then you’re gonna be an All-Star, and then you’re gonna dunk on Wemby.”

The comment was clearly a joke. But it resonated because of who he mentioned.

Victor Wembanyama has already changed the NBA conversation

Victor Wembanyama, the centerpiece of the San Antonio Spurs, won the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year award in a near-unanimous vote, according to official league results. He also finished among the league leaders in blocks per game during his debut season, per NBA.com/stats.

Dunking on Wembanyama has not been common.

At 7-foot-4 with elite timing and reach, he has quickly turned the paint into restricted territory. That is part of what made Antetokounmpo’s joke land. For his son to someday dunk on Wembanyama in the NBA, the Spurs star would likely need to enjoy extraordinary longevity.

Given how careers have evolved, it is not impossible. Players such as LeBron James are still performing at a high level more than two decades into their careers, showing how modern sports science continues to extend primes.

“So at 19, you’re gonna get drafted, and then you’re gonna be Rookie of the Year, and then you’re gonna be an All-Star, and then you’re gonna dunk on Wemby…

Trade deadline tension around the Milwaukee Bucks

The viral moment arrived during a period of uncertainty in Milwaukee. The NBA trade deadline passed with Antetokounmpo still on the roster, despite weeks of speculation. The Bucks chose stability, at least for now.

This season has felt different from previous championship-contending years.

Milwaukee is navigating injuries, roster adjustments, and questions about long-term direction. Some analysts have discussed whether the team could carefully manage Antetokounmpo’s workload as the season progresses.

The Bucks currently hold the lesser of their own draft pick or that of the New Orleans Pelicans, limiting incentives for any dramatic late-season strategy shift. The organization has not publicly indicated plans to shut him down.

A generational crossover moment

Antetokounmpo entered the NBA in 2013 as a developmental prospect. Wembanyama arrived with global expectations already attached.

Now both share the same league spotlight, one as an established champion and two-time MVP, the other as a rising franchise cornerstone. The joke between father and son subtly captured that transition.

Giannis represents the established elite. Wembanyama increasingly represents the next era.

The 2025-26 season resumes Friday night for Milwaukee with a road game in New Orleans. Antetokounmpo’s health remains the immediate focus, while broader questions about the franchise’s future will continue to surface.

For now, the All-Star moment stands as a reminder that even during uncertain stretches, the NBA still produces scenes that blend humor, ambition, and the evolving story of its stars.
