Gervonta Davis, whereabouts unknown, stripped of lightweight title

Gervonta Davis is missing after police issued an arrest warrant for him a few days ago for alleged assault, unlawful detention and attempted kidnapping.

After learning of this, the World Boxing Association (WBA) has named Davis champion in recess, stripping him of his lightweight title. In this regard, the lawyer for one of the women who filed a complaint said that “we sent our judicial officer to his home up to six times without any success.”

The decision by the boxing body opens the door for the title to be vacated. The WBA’s intention is to avoid the division being paralysed by doubts over Gervonta’s short-term future.

It should be remembered that it was the boxer’s ex-girlfriend, Courtney Rossel, who accused Davis of assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The events occurred on October 27 when, allegedly, the Baltimore boxer attacked Rossel at her workplace after threatening to kill her.

Before that incident, the boxer already had a criminal record. In February 2020, when he was attending a charity basketball game at the University of Miami with the mother of his daughter, he publicly assaulted his partner. A video showed him grabbing her by the neck, lifting her out of her seat and taking her out of public view. Two days later, he turned himself in to police.
