Picture a quiet Miami street at dusk, flashing lights bouncing off parked cars, as officers finally close in on Gervonta “Tank” Davis, ending two weeks of uncertainty and rumors surrounding the boxing star’s sudden disappearance.
The WBA lightweight champion, 31, was arrested Wednesday after Miami Gardens Police issued a warrant on January 15, charging him with false imprisonment, battery, and attempted kidnapping tied to an October incident.
Police worked alongside the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force to locate Davis, setting bail at $16,000, as fans and promoters alike waited anxiously for clarity on his future inside and outside the ring.
In a January statement, Miami police said Davis allegedly “grabbed” the victim “by the back of her hair with one hand and by her throat with the other”, before “forcefully” trying to move her.
The report also notes that the lead detective on the case, Gary Florencio, has “viewed video surveillance footage that co-operates key elements of the victim’s statement,” presenting a damning situation for the boxer.
Additionally, Davis is also facing a civil lawsuit from former girlfriend Courtney Rossel, filed in October, accusing him of battery, aggravated battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Rossel is seeking compensatory and punitive damages “of over $50,000” and has requested a jury trial, adding further pressure as Davis attempts to stabilize his career and public image.
And in the past, Davis has faced domestic charges six months ago, arrests in 2020 and 2022, and 44 days in jail in 2023 for violating house arrest tied to a hit-and-run case.
Looking ahead, Davis faces pivotal months, including court proceedings and boxing licensing reviews as he struggles to rebuild credibility. Is his career over?
How did Gervonta Davis‘ last fight go?
Davis‘ most recent bout showed that even elite champions can struggle under pressure, as his WBA title defense against Lamont Roach Jr. ended in a surprising majority draw at Barclays Center in his most recent fight.
Two judges scored the fight 114-114 in May 2025, while a third had it 115-113 for Davis, with ESPN also scoring it even, leaving many fans stunned after he entered as a -2000 betting favorite.
A controversial ninth-round moment shifted momentum, when Davis took a knee after a jab, yet referee Steve Wilkes declined to rule it a knockdown, allowing the fight to continue without penalty.

“I just got my hair done two days ago and she put grease in my hair,” Davis claimed. “When I was sweating and things like that, it burned my eyes.”
Roach accepted the explanation but stressed the rules, as the missed call likely prevented a 10-8 round that could have handed him victory, altering Davis‘ unbeaten record permanently.
Throughout the fight, Roach stood firm, absorbed punishment, and countered effectively, forcing Davis to abandon his patient approach and press forward in the closing rounds to save the draw.
