Internal incidents between teammates are revealed from time to time among the dynamics carried out by the team on social networks. However, this time they have been revealed in interviews with the media, where Gerrit Cole, a New York Yankees reliever who is currently out of action due to injury, recalled how Clarke Schmidt often finds ways to frustrate opposing players.

On Thursday, the Yankees stars Cole, Will Warren, Schmidt and Oswaldo Cabrera had a special task. Instead of the usual crowd of journalists, the home players were invited to a children-only conference. Naturally, many funny questions arose as the youngsters tried to better understand the daily lives of some of their favorite players. One of them was directed at Cole, when a child asked him who he thought was his funniest teammate.

How does Clarke Schmidt distract his rivals?

Gerrith Cole named his teammate Clarke Schmidt and revealed how the 29-year-old’s witty antics from the dugout. “Clarke calls out opposing players for pure fun. He’s a teammate who never fails to bring a smile to your face. I think he’s the funniest. He makes us laugh a lot. He has a lot of witty reactions on the bench; when the opposing team doesn’t play well, he likes to let them know with his words and sounds.” Cole said.

In another anecdote, Cole mentions what phrases Schmidt says against opposing pitchers. “If you threw a ball way outside, you could hear out of the corner of your eye: ‘Wow!’ Or, if you threw it a little low, you could hear: ‘That ball is down and low! You have to raise it! So he always keeps it light in the doughout,” said Gerrit Cole, who took his first steps in recovery from Tommy John surgery in mid-August.

How is Gerrit Cole’s recovery going?

During spring training, the Yankees suffered a major injury blow as Gerrit Cole complained of elbow pain. Upon further examination, it was determined that Tommy John surgery was the best option, and Cole underwent surgery on March 11. With the goal of returning sometime in early 2026, Cole took his first steps toward recovery on Aug. 12. He threw around 20 pitches from flat ground in the outfield at Yankee Stadium, according to insider Bryan Hoch.

Cole is reportedly expected to have a recovery period of around 14 months and will begin throwing on a mound at some point towards the end of the year. Cole, a six-time All-Star and 2023 Cy Young Award winner, is one of the best in the business and fans will be hoping that everything goes well in the ace’s rehabilitation.
