Geno Auriemma starts another ‘war’ with Caitlin Clark over ‘upsetting’ Super Bowl prediction

The Super Bowl is just days away, and the hearts and minds of American football fans will be captured by the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs as they jostle to lift the Lombardi Trophy. Many believe the Chiefs have a date with destiny as they pursue a third successive Super Bowl triumph, but the Eagles and their explosive running game will try to keep the ball away from Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

As battle lines are drawn in the buildup to Super Bowl LIX, a familiar “rivalry” is being renewed along these lines. Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma has come under fire before for his opinion on Caitlin Clark, the former Iowa Hawkeyes star who has taken her game to new heights in the WNBA. Now, the two titans of women’s basketball are set to butt heads once again, just in time for kickoff from Caesars Superdome.

Clark’s Chiefs vs. Auriemma’s Eagles

Auriemma, who was born in Italy but was raised in Pennsylvania, is a lifelong Eagles fan — and he has told the media that he believes his favorite team will overcome the challenge of the Chiefs and win Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night.

This is in direct opposition to Clark, a Des Moines, Iowa native who helped her hometown Hawkeyes eliminate Auriemma’s Huskies from the NCAA Tournament‘s Final Four last season. Clark is a lifelong Chiefs fan who appeared on Kelce‘s podcast last month, and her favorite team’s rise into an annual juggernaut has been perhaps her greatest pride away from the hardwood.

The Chiefs are slim 1.5-point favorites to defeat the Eagles on Sunday and thus complete their historic three-peat, which would be a first for any NFL franchise. The game is sure to be hotly-contested, and an extension of the intense attention that women’s basketball has received in the past couple of years.
