UConn Huskies coach Geno Auriemma recently praised WNBA superstarPaige Bueckers suggesting she possesses the talent and character to emerge as a leading guard for USA Basketball, and perhaps, replace the vacant spot left by Sue Bird’s retirement.

These remarks arrive after Bueckers accepted an invitation to the upcoming USA senior national-team camp in December. Auriemma took the oportunity and addressed her early success so far, stating her talent and willigness to develop:

I believe the first step is to get invited. So, that’s number one and that’s happened. Whatever you need her to do, she’s going to do it

Geno Auriemma on Bueckers

From UConn legend to national-team contender

Bueckers’ journey since her departure from the college league has already been marked by the resilience, skill and maturity she has shown in every game and off court situation. The guard formed at the UConn Huskies became WNBA Rookie of the Year with the Dallas Wings, solidifying her status as one of the best player of her generation.

Her rookie season impressed not only fans and WNBA insiders but also her former mentor: Auriemma pointed out that Bueckers “can handle herself at this level of competition” and “can be what her team needs her to be.”

With her official invite to the USA Basketball camp Bueckers now stands at the beginning of a new chapter, potentially becoming part of the national setup preparing for upcoming international competitions.

Auriemma’s optimistic endorsement

Auriemma knows what she is capable of and assures she will match the challenge. He noted that in the post-Sue Bird era, USA Basketball lacks a “clear-cut successor” for its leadership. Yet, when asked whether Bueckers could fill that role, he admitted uncertainty about timing.

Maybe she’s too young … or maybe she’s ready. But I do know she has all the things she needs

Geno Auriemma

His comments carry much weight because Auriemma knows what high-level consistency demands. For years, he guided UConn through many NCAA tournaments that can be compared to some international plays. Bueckers, under his leaedership, learned to thrive under expectations.
