Gauff in a Slump, Opens Up About Rival, a Teen Canadian Who Eliminated Her in Straight Sets

Tennis star Coco Gauff has been struggling immensely since her French Open victory. Since that moment, she has only been able to win two of her last five matches. In the Canadian Open held in Montreal, she was defeated by the young 18-year-old, Victoria Mboko, in straight sets with a final score of 6-1 and 6-4. This loss marks a challenging period for the American player, who has yet to regain the form that led her to a major title.

After the match, Gauff made a truly revealing statement about her opponent, Mboko, which reflects her current situation.

She’s playing high-level tennis,” Gauff said. “I think that’s what showed today. I think she was the better player.

These comments were made to the press, highlighting Gauff’s sportsmanship and her acknowledgment of Mboko’s superior performance on the day.

Mboko has his revenge against Coco Gauff

For Mboko, this win was sweet revenge against Coco Gauff. Victoria Mboko, ranked 87th in the world, has reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in her career. It took her just over an hour to defeat Coco Gauff, forcing her to commit 24 unforced errors and five double faults throughout the match. These errors have become a recurring problem for Gauff since her triumph at Roland Garros, indicating issues with her consistency and focus. The match served as a clear demonstration of Mboko’s growing potential and Gauff’s recent vulnerability.

Mboko quickly gained control of the match, building confidence with every point she won. This momentum made her feel secure and strong enough to close out the match, which she ultimately did with impressive composure for a player her age. The crowd at Montreal’s IGA Stadium also provided crucial support for the young Canadian. As the local player, the crowd’s energy was a significant advantage.

Mboko later explained how the crowd’s support gave her an extra boost, especially during the final stages of the second set.

When I was up 5-4, the crowd started cheering even louder, and everything got super noisy,”…”I used that as more fuel for myself and to pump myself up a little bit more. I just used the crowd to my advantage as much as I could.

She said.

This victory also served as payback for their previous match in Rome earlier this year, where Gauff had been the winner. Mboko confessed that she had kept that loss in her mind as motivation, until this Saturday, when she finally got her revenge.

I was actually really thinking about it a lot during the match,” she said. “I had flashbacks to when I played her in Rome a little bit. I just remember when she came out playing even better and stepped it up a bit better. Wanted to step my game up a little bit more and make sure I matched whatever she was producing, and I wanted to stay right there with her.

This focus on past experiences highlights her determination.

Now, Mboko will face Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the quarter-finals, where she hopes to continue her winning streak and advance on her path to the final. Every match in any sport is difficult, but in the final stages of a major tournament, pressure plays a key role.

Mental serenity is essential for athletes to achieve victory. It is also important to overcome initial setbacks to see the bigger picture. The crowd’s continued support will be fundamental for the 18-year-old. She must use this support as a weapon in her favor and not allow the pressure to overwhelm her. She has already shown she has the quality to compete with and beat the best players in the world. Now she just needs to be consistent to keep the victories coming, one after another, as she progresses through the tournament.
