Misfortune continues to plague Garrett Wilson and the New York Jets. Just over two months ago, the standout receiver injured his knee and has been sidelined ever since. On Friday, head coach Aaron Glenn announced that Wilson will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
Wilson has been one of the few bright spots for the Jets in recent years. Drafted 10th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, the young receiver quickly became the anchor of the team’s offense.
Despite catching passes from seven different quarterbacks in just three seasons, Wilson has consistently produced numbers worthy of an elite receiver. He surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first three years in the NFL-a streak cut short this season by injury.
The Jets’ difficult decision
Glenn delivered the news during a press conference before Friday’s practice. After missing seven of the last eight games, the team decided to shut Wilson down for the remainder of the year.
“Garrett is doing a really good job in his rehab, but after talking with the doctors and with him, we’re going to hold him out for the rest of the season,” Glenn said.
The focus now shifts to the offseason. “He will be ready to go as the offseason program starts up, and I’m excited about that,” Glenn added.
“We just felt it was best for him and for us as a team. He’s on board. He’s going to be smart with his rehab,” the coach explained, emphasizing Wilson’s importance to the franchise.
Even Wilson couldn’t save the Jets
In just over six games this season, Wilson recorded 36 catches, 395 yards, and three touchdowns. His production suggested he was on track for another 1,000-yard campaign.
But beyond the numbers, the Jets’ front office had to weigh the risks of bringing back one of their best players for a season already lost.
With a 3-11 record, last place in the AFC East, and only three games remaining, Wilson’s return would not have changed the team’s fate.
“To be able to get him back in the offseason program fully healthy and ready to go, we felt that was the best decision for all of us,” Glenn concluded.
