Shilo Sanders has never been one to limit himself to a single path. Just days after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the rookie safety, and son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, has hinted that football may not be his only future.
Instead, he is already talking openly about opportunities in music, acting, and modeling, showing the same versatility his family has long been known for.
The timing of Sanders’ release was harsh. Cut during roster trims ahead of the new season, the undrafted rookie had shown flashes of potential in preseason but saw his campaign unravel after being ejected from a game against the Buffalo Bills for throwing a punch at tight end Zach Davidson.
The Buccaneers chose to part ways with him shortly after, and while the team has reportedly left the door open to a practice squad role, Sanders himself is now taking a broader view.
“In every athlete’s life it becomes a point to where the game ends for you. And I’m not saying that’s what it is now,” Sanders explained in a video on his YouTube channel.
“I’m just saying mentally I’m good because I know that I got a lot of talents and I’ve been blessed. Music, acting, modeling… I’m well versed, and my parents made sure of that.”
The 24-year-old safety went unselected in April’s NFL Draft, though analysts once projected him as high as a fifth-round pick. His brother Shedeur, now with the Cleveland Browns, also fell further than expected.
Despite the disappointment, Sanders signed with Tampa Bay, showing flashes of promise while making four tackles in preseason action.
Yet one mistake proved costly. His ejection against Buffalo left a mark, with head coach Todd Bowles describing the punch as “inexcusable.” That moment may have sealed his short-term NFL fate. Still, Sanders has handled the release with maturity.
“My time being up here with the Buccaneers has been nothing but great,” he said. “The city, my teammates, my coaches, everybody’s always poured in love and support toward me, and I’ll forever be grateful for that. I had the best time up here in Tampa.”
Pro Football Talk reported that Tampa Bay coaches valued Sanders’ attitude and respectfulness during his brief stay, with one source suggesting the organization would consider adding him to the practice squad if another opportunity does not arise elsewhere.
The backing of Coach Prime
Few athletes have redefined themselves across sports and entertainment quite like Deion Sanders, and unsurprisingly, he has been quick to defend his son’s next steps.
“Shilo’s a man of many talents,” Deion said this week. “All the Sanders are going to be straight with or without football. You better believe that I take care of mine and I always have. You better believe that.”
It was a reminder that Shilo grew up in an environment that celebrated ambition beyond the field. From Deion’s two-sport legacy to his growing media and business empire, the Sanders family brand has always blended sports with entertainment.
Shilo stepping into music, modeling, or acting would not be a departure so much as a continuation of that ethos.
