Taylor Fritz has the measure of Alexander Zverev, whom he has defeated in the last four meetings. The latest of these took place on Saturday in the semifinals of the ATP Finals. The balance was tipped in favor of the American, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3). Taylor is the first player from his country to reach the final of the Masters tournament since James Blake in 2006, when the tournament was held at the Qi Zhong in Shanghai. He awaits the winner of the match between Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud.
Zverev, who reached the semi-finals unbeaten and without dropping a set, levelled the score and took the match to a tiebreak in the third set. His executioner was better in the seven-point tiebreaker. Fritz recorded only the second victory of his career against a world number two. The first was years ago at the same venue against Rafael Nadal.
The defeat will not allow Sascha to distance himself further from Carlos Alcaraz in the rankings. The difference between the two is 905 points before they meet again at the 2025 Australian Open (January 12-26).
Drop in Germany
Zverev’s good tennis form will not be able to be used by the German Davis Cup team. The Hamburg-born player has declined the option to attend the Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga. The Germans play Canada in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, November 20, and could face Spain in a hypothetical semi-final on Friday, November 22. Fritz will be in Malaga representing the United States. His team does not start until Thursday 21. It will be against Alex de Minaur’s Australia.
