Francisco Alvarez‘s season with the Mets has taken another unfortunate turn. The catcher was forced to leave Sunday’s 7-3 win over the Mariners in the Little League Classic due to a right thumb injury, which he suffered while sliding headfirst into second base. The team has confirmed that Alvarez will return to New York for an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

The player’s injury is worrying at an important time of the season, especially as it is not his first complication with his hand. Alvarez has had several physical problems and this sets off alarm bells in the team.

A history of injuries

This injury adds to a history of hand and wrist problems that have affected Alvarez. Earlier this season, the Venezuelan suffered a fracture in his left hamate bone, an injury that forced him to a brief stint with Triple-A Syracuse for rehabilitation.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza did not hide his concern for the catcher’s welfare. “We don’t know what we’re dealing with,” the manager told the media. “I’m not going to lie. It’s the third time, but I’m not going to sit here and speculate.” Despite the setbacks, Alvarez had managed to impress the team with his work ethic and improved production following his return to the majors.

McLean and a necessary rotation in the Mets

McLean’s debut in the game was particularly significant due to the recent problems with the Mets’ rotation. The team has been looking for pitchers who can provide stability and the performance of McLean, along with the recovery of Tylor Megill, offers a light at the end of the tunnel

Despite injury problems, the Mets manage to win and also rotate a roster full of talent, but which for physical reasons is not always 100% available.
