Fracture in the NBA over strip club tribute: from “it’s an art” to “it’s objectifying women”

Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors defends the Atlanta Hawks’ strip club ‘Magic City’ tribute, which was criticised by Luke Kornet (San Antonio Spurs).

“The NBA should protect and value women, many of whom work hard every day to make this the best basketball league in the world. We should promote a protective and respectful environment for the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers and partners we know and love,” Kornet shared in a letter against the Hawks’ tribute to Atlanta’s famous adult entertainment center.

Regardless of how a woman enters the adult entertainment industry, many in the industry suffer abuse, harassment and violence that they should never be subjected to

The Spurs player believes that “to allow that night to go ahead without protest would give the NBA a bad image as a community, especially by being complicit in the possible objectification and mistreatment of women in our society. Regardless of how a woman enters the adult entertainment industry, in that realm many suffer abuse, harassment and violence to which they should never be subjected.”

After Kornet’s criticism, it was the controversial Draymond Green who defended the Hawks’ ability to “honor one of Atlanta’s iconic cultural institutions” on the Magic City Knight they have scheduled for March 16.

Draymond Green described the exotic dancing at Magic City as “an art”

“I don’t know if you’ve ever been, but if you see it in action, it’s an art form, that some choose to enjoy and some don’t,” he said on ‘The Draymond Green Show’.

“Cardi B is filling stadiums and her past is that. I don’t think she has self-esteem issues.”

Green disagrees with Kornet’s implicit stance that adult entertainment does not protect or value women.

The Warriors power forward argued that “Cardi B is filling stadiums and her past is that. I don’t think Cardi B has self-esteem issues.”

“So I think that’s a negative view of women working in this industry; that, by choosing this job, they have self-esteem issues,” she said.

Draymond Green argued that the adult entertainment industry is an important part of Atlanta’s culture: “To say that much of Atlanta’s culture reflects poorly on the NBA as a community, I completely disagree, because the NBA as a community is very inclusive.”

“So I don’t quite understand why this particular night is bad for the community in such an inclusive community,” he insisted.
