They say nothing lasts forever and that can be confirmed by David Robertson, who after a long 18-year career in professional baseball, has decided to call it a day and announced his retirement from the sport that gave him the greatest joys of his life.

The 40-year-old took to social media to make the announcement of his farewell, where he thanked baseball above all, explaining that it gave him the best years of his life and that he is proud of the great achievements he had with the sport, but that it was time to say goodbye.

David Robertson announces his retirement

Through an emotional statement on his social media, the Alabama native expressed that it is time to close this chapter:

I’ve decided it’s time to retire from the game I’ve loved for as long as I can remember. Baseball gave me more than I dreamed of,” said the pitcher

Robertson also used the statement to thank all the people who were part of his successful career. “I have had the privilege of playing alongside incredible teammates, learning from outstanding coaches and being welcomed into organizations that felt like my family. To the coaches, clubhouse staff, front offices and everyone who works behind the scenes, thank you for everything you do.”

In addition, the 40-year-old highlighted the achievements during his baseball adventure. “From winning a World Series, to pitching in an All-Star Game, representing the United States and bringing home a World Baseball Classic gold and an Olympic silver.”

David Robertson’s legacy with the Yankees

Robertson will be remembered primarily for his impact with the Yankees. During nine seasons over two stints, he appeared in 501 games. His high point came in 2009, when he was part of the World Series-winning team, and in 2011, when he was selected to the All-Star Game after posting a spectacular 1.08 ERA.

However, his biggest challenge came in 2014, when he had the difficult task of succeeding Panamanian legend Mariano Rivera as the team’s closer, more than living up to the pressure in New York.

His final statistics reflect a career of pure consistency:

  • 881 games played.
  • 179 total saves.
  • 2.93 earned run average (ERA).
  • International medals: Gold in the World Baseball Classic and Silver in the Olympic Games with the United States.
