Former NFL Head Coach slams Kevin Stefanski and believes Shedeur Sanders will win the starting job with the Cleveland Browns

We’re a week and a half away from rookies reporting to training camp for the Cleveland Browns, and that means Shedeur Sanders will be showing up-bringing with him a media frenzy thanks to being the high-profile son of NFL legend Deion Sanders.

Shedeur Sanders arrives with an almost impossible mission. Currently wearing No. 12, he’s the last option in the Browns’ quarterback depth chart competing for the starting role. Ahead of him are Joe Flacco, the current front-runner, as well as Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.

Reports from minicamp and OTAs indicated that Shedeur Sanders had solid performances. However, he was the only quarterback who didn’t get any reps with the first team under Head Coach Kevin Stefanski, which makes things difficult for the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback.

Former NFL coach Believes Shedeur Sanders will win the job

Despite Shedeur Sanders being the last quarterback on the Browns’ depth chart, former NFL head coach Herm Edwards shared his thoughts on The Coach JB Show, stating he believes Shedeur is the most talented quarterback and will end up winning the starting job.

“I think he’s going to win the job. I’ve known him since he was a kid. I think the ‘Deion factor’-that confidence, that swagger-is what turned some teams off. But if I were there, I’d go with the rookie,” said Herm Edwards. “I used to tell veterans: if it’s close between you and a rookie, I’m going with the rookie.”

Still, Shedeur Sanders’ situation in Cleveland remains tough. The Browns face a difficult schedule, and if they end up with a 3-14 record like in 2024, and with two first-round picks, it’s highly likely the team would pursue another quarterback in the next NFL Draft.
