One of the most discreet decisions of last winter’s preseason has severely damaged the New York Yankees. It is possible that this forgettable weekend may have been regretted. However, it is worth noting that the latest decisions that have been made around the Bronx outfit have been counterproductive to the point of being on the verge of elimination and reaching the top of the American League East has become a dream.
Carlos Narvaez had risen through the ranks of the New York Yankees organization since 2015. They signed him as an international free agent and he began his professional career as a rookie at the age of 17. After a brief stint with the club that developed him in 2024, Narvaez finally got a real shot in the majors, but with the Boston Red Sox, and has made his former club pay for trading him.
Narvaez’s performance in Yankees’ humiliating weekend
In the midst of Boston’s 12-1 thrashing of the Yankees at home, Narvaez led the offense, going 3-4 with two RBIs. Overwhelming would be the best way to describe what the former New York player did to his former team in their own backyard. Every time he made contact, it was as if every ball came off his bat with rocket fuel. If he had a grudge against his surprise departure, he certainly showed it.
In Narvaez’s three hits, he displayed exceptional bat speed, exceeding 75 MPH on each occasion. This surpasses his average of 72.2 MPH for the year, which puts him in the 50th percentile of MLB. With that elite bat speed, he achieved great exit velocity numbers. His single against Will Warren was 109.3 MPH. He hit another single off Tim Hill at 102 MPH.
Narvaez’s final nail in the Yankees’ coffin
However, it was against New York Yankees’ Paul Blackburn that he hit a 414-foot, 104.7 MPH home run. That hit was a blow to the silence of the fans at Yankee Stadium and subsequently turned into boos for the home team. On the season, Narvaez is hitting .249/.321/.417. His game is excellent against his former team, with whom he played only six games in the Major Leagues.
Against the Yankees, he has Judgian numbers, hitting .348/.545/.652 in 33 plate appearances. He has a double, two home runs and six RBIs. His 15 total bases against the Yankees are the most he has had against any team. Second are the Blue Jays with 11, against whom he has a poor .554 OPS. The only advantage for the Yankees is that they could count on Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz. At 21 years old, he has pitched to a 2.28 ERA in 126.1 innings pitched for Somerset and Hudson Valley.
