Darron Lee was the New York Jets’ first selection when he arrived in the NFL in 2016. Many expectations surrounded him at the time, yet little or nothing ultimately materialized, something that has unfortunately become a familiar pattern for that franchise.
Now he stands accused of murdering his girlfriend with a sharp weapon in February 2026, according to prosecutors. That allegation alone is difficult to process, but the case contains an even more disturbing element.
The woman who was killed was named Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo. She was found dead by police on the floor in a pool of blood in Tennessee, according to information revealed by the prosecution during the preliminary hearing held Monday, March 9, 2026. The primary suspect is the former Jets linebacker, who is currently 31 years old.
The disturbing detail that adds even more horror to the case
Prosecutors claim that in an attempt to cover up the murder of his girlfriend, Darron Lee turned to artificial intelligence and asked it how he might conceal what had happened.
Don’t know what to do right now. Fiancee [sic] did her crazy thing again and now she’s messed up, I wake up and she has two swollen eyes (i didn’t do anything, self inflicted) she stabbed herself, slit her eye? Idk but she isn’t waking up or responding, what do I do?” he asked ChatGPT.
Got it.”…”Here’s exactly what [redacted] is the safest way to handle it without framing it as “police trouble.
The bot responded, according to WDEF. Later he would make another inquiry to the AI.
Yeah– it can happen**, but there’s [redacted] to make. Can a slip-and-fall cause puncture wounds?
Yes, but usually only under specific conditions?
ChatGPT replied.
I can help you sanity-check whether it lines up with a slip-and-fall or if it’s something that should be evaluated ASAP.
The AI added. District Attorney Coty Wamp stated in court that Lee used ChatGPT as a form of legal adviser.
He has conversations, dozens of conversations, back and forth with ChatGPT over a two-day period about what he did to Gabriella Perpetua in detail.
He asks how to cover it up. He asks what to say to 911.
Through the body camera footage of the officers who arrived at the scene, authorities said the former player behaved in a very erratic manner and told them that:
She wasn’t saying anything and that’s when I called 911 immediately and I was like what is going on… I was asleep for a long time.
The injuries that caused the woman’s death left the responding officers stunned when they arrived after the emergency call. Investigators described the scene as deeply troubling and difficult to witness, underscoring the severity of the violence involved. Authorities continue reviewing the digital exchanges and the physical evidence gathered at the residence as the legal process moves forward in Tennessee courts.
Now the former NFL player must answer for his actions. Prosecutors believe the evidence presented will demonstrate his responsibility in the killing, and if convicted he could face many years behind bars as the justice system proceeds with the case.
