Former Cowboys star Kelvin Joseph Jr. arrested for drunk driving after fatal accident

Kelvin Joseph Jr., a once-promising NFL cornerback and current member of the UFL’s DC Defenders, was arrested early Saturday morning in Texas following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 27-year-old motorcyclist. According to a statement from the Richardson Police Department, officers responded to the scene of a fatal crash at approximately 05:00 on Saturday in Richardson, Texas.

When they arrived, they discovered the body of Cody Morris of Plano, Texas. Authorities initially reported that there was no second vehicle present at the scene.

Roughly 40 minutes later, Plano Police say they received a call from Joseph, who allegedly contacted law enforcement and revealed that he had been involved in a crash earlier that morning while driving a BMW sedan. Investigators determined that Joseph’s vehicle had struck the motorcycle operated by Morris.

Upon speaking with the 23-year-old former Dallas Cowboys player, officers reported observing signs of intoxication. Joseph was taken into custody and later charged with driving while intoxicated and collision involving personal injury or death, both of which are serious offenses under Texas law.

From NFL promise to legal trouble

Kelvin Joseph was selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys after a standout college career at LSU and Kentucky. Though his raw athleticism once pointed to a bright future, Joseph’s NFL career never fully materialized.

In total, he played in 33 games over four seasons, making stops with the Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks, and Indianapolis Colts. He last appeared on an NFL roster in 2024 before transitioning to the United Football League (UFL), where he recently joined the DC Defenders in hopes of revitalizing his career.

This isn’t Joseph’s first brush with legal controversy. In 2022, he was questioned in connection with a fatal shooting in Dallas after surveillance footage reportedly showed him at the scene. Though he was not charged in that incident, it cast a shadow over his reputation and contributed to his eventual departure from Dallas.

Saturday’s arrest may prove to be far more consequential, however, given that it involves a fatality and possible intoxication. If convicted, Joseph could face significant prison time, in addition to the likely end of his professional football career.
