Former Cowboys player Greg Hardy back in headlines: Arrested after girlfriend’s assault allegations

Greg Hardy, a former NFL Pro Bowler and UFC fighter, was arrested on June 4 in Richardson, Texas, on charges of assault causing bodily injury to a family member. The 36-year-old was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. and later released on a $1,000 bond.

According to police reports, the incident began when Hardy and his girlfriend returned home from a park outing with their children. An argument ensued after she confronted him about messages from another woman found on his phone.

She alleges that Hardy pushed her onto a bed and placed his hands around her neck, though she did not lose consciousness. Officers noted visible scratches and redness on her arms.

Hardy admitted to the argument, claiming his girlfriend poked him in the forehead, which “hurt,” and that he “moved her out of the way and placed her on the bed by grabbing her arms.”

A History of Legal Troubles

This arrest adds to Hardy‘s history of legal issues. In 2014, he was convicted of assaulting his then-girlfriend, Nicole Holder, after she accused him of throwing her onto furniture, strangling her, and threatening her life.

Although he appealed the conviction, the case was dismissed when Holder failed to appear in court. Despite the dismissal, the NFL suspended Hardy for ten games, later reduced to four.

In 2016, Hardy was arrested for cocaine possession after a traffic stop in Richardson, Texas. Police found 0.7 grams of cocaine in his wallet. He claimed he was unaware of the substance, suggesting someone at a party had given it to him. He was released on a $5,000 bond.

Following his NFL career, Hardy transitioned to mixed martial arts, compiling a 7-5 record with appearances in the UFC. His tenure in combat sports was marked by controversy due to his past legal issues. He last fought in December 2024, suffering a knockout loss to Russian boxer Alexei Papin.

Hardy‘s repeated legal troubles have overshadowed his athletic achievements, raising questions about accountability and rehabilitation in professional sports.
