Former Chiefs safety praises Patrick Mahomes’ legendary talent

As the 2025 NFL season draws near, debates about the best quarterback in the league are intensifying. Names like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and others are often thrown into the conversation, but former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu believes Patrick Mahomes is the standout.

Having played with and against Mahomes, Mathieu offers a unique perspective on why Mahomes stands out as one of the NFL’s all-time greats.

Mahomes’ career is already filled with remarkable milestones, few of which other quarterbacks can match. Although the Chiefs fell short of winning the Super Bowl last season, they still managed to make it to the big game three times in a row, a feat that highlights Mahomes’ consistency in getting his team to the pinnacle of the sport.

More importantly, Mahomes has demonstrated a rare ability to deliver in high-pressure moments, securing three Super Bowl championships in the process.

Despite some criticism around his deep-ball accuracy in recent seasons, Mahomes continues to prove he is more than capable of adjusting his game and remaining effective. His leadership on and off the field has been a key factor in the Chiefs’ sustained success, as he constantly finds ways to help his team win, even when things don’t go according to plan.

While Mahomes’ stats speak for themselves, his value goes beyond numbers. His ability to make plays in critical moments, combined with his skill set and leadership, makes him a player that opposing defenses never want to face. Mahomes’ adaptability is one of the reasons he is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league today.

Mathieu’s endorsement

Tyrann Mathieu, who played for the Chiefs from 2019 to 2021, has seen Mahomes perform in both practice and real-game situations. Recently, Mathieu praised Mahomes’ abilities during an interview on First Things First, offering a glowing endorsement of his former teammate. Mathieu referred to Mahomes as “one of the best players” he’s ever competed with or against, adding that he would “never count [Mahomes] out.”

Mathieu also noted Mahomes’ potential to become one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. “He’s that guy,” Mathieu said, emphasizing that Mahomes is the type of player who thrives in any situation.

This level of trust and admiration from a former player is significant, especially considering Mathieu’s firsthand experience watching Mahomes navigate some of the most intense moments in football.

For Mathieu, Mahomes’ ability to perform in clutch situations, paired with his leadership and relentless drive, is what sets him apart from other quarterbacks in the league. The endorsement of a former teammate speaks volumes, providing valuable insight into Mahomes’ mindset and his ability to elevate his game under pressure.

As the Chiefs prepare for the 2025 season, Mahomes will have another chance to silence any remaining doubters. With major matchups against teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills on the horizon, Mahomes has an opportunity to further solidify his place among the NFL’s all-time greats.

His continued success could further validate Mathieu’s belief that Mahomes is not just one of the best today but will be remembered as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game.
