There are people who could be considered heroes for their actions, especially those who save lives, as was the case of former professional boxer Musa Abdraim, who did not hesitate for a second to help airport authorities neutralize an assailant who was threatening a young woman with a knife and claiming to have a bomb in his backpack.

The retired 52-year-old boxer, who is a father of five children, has starred in images in which he is seen not hesitating to risk his life at Almaty airport in Kazakhstan. He wanted to exchange himself for the hostage taken by the aggressor, a 21-year-old security officer, Botagoz Mukhtarova.

The scene that was left in a scare… and an arrest

The terrifying episode occurred when a 67-year-old man, when asked to show his identification at the security checkpoint, reacted violently by pulling out a knife and taking Mukhtarova hostage, threatening to stab her. He also claimed to have a bomb that he could detonate from his phone. “The attacker had a knife and a phone. He told the police that he would press a button and everything would explode,” recalls hero Abdraim.

In the midst of the chaos, with security guards and police watching the scene, Abdraim made a decision that could have cost him his life. He offered to take the place of the young hostage, causing the attacker to release her and take him instead. When the attacker accepted the exchange, Abdraim took advantage of a moment of distraction to pounce on him and snatch the knife from his own hands by the blade. A struggle ensued, but finally, with the help of airport security and police, the man was overpowered and arrested.

A hero who is going to be decorated

“I came to the airport to see off my relatives and suddenly I heard a girl screaming. I saw that she was going to be stabbed and I said: ‘Take me hostage instead of her’,” he began by saying about the reasons that led him to be the protagonist of this scare. “In the past, I did boxing, martial arts, Thai boxing, kickboxing… but that was a long time ago,” he acknowledged his knowledge of hand-to-hand fighting.

Now, the Kazakh authorities have reported that the attacker faces a sentence of up to 12 years in prison for his actions. In addition, the country’s president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, announced that Abdraim will receive a state medal in recognition of his bravery. An award worthy of his heroism.
