Former boxer accuses Canelo Alvarez of wanting money more than boxing and being afraid of David Benavidez

When the novel between Canelo and Benavidez seemed to be over, a new chapter has been written. Boxing fans still hope to see this fight in the near future and as long as someone does not retire from the ring, the miracle can happen.

However, the reality is that the possibilities are becoming increasingly scarce after the contractual agreements that Saul Alvarez has signed and therefore he has been the subject of much criticism for agreeing fights and being carried away by money. Undoubtedly, the famous Canelo has managed to generate profits in the boxing world and has found one more to ignore David Benavidez.

The new chapter has been courtesy of the former four-division champion Mikey Garcia, who spoke about Canelo Alvarez’s four-fight deal with Saudi Arabian promoters where he claimed that he will be able to make a lot of money against Terence Crawford and William Scull, although “he’s not doing any fight because boxing matters, he’s doing low-risk fights to, you know, (make a lot of money)”.

It has been estimated that the Mexican’s income ranges between $40 and $50 million. This same figure was validated by Mikey Garcia, who also analyzed the lucrative situation that Canelo is going through. “You can’t blame him. In the last five or six fights, he (Canelo) has probably made $200 million. Probably more. So why would he risk it all? Would he take any fight that is high risk?” reflected the veteran boxer.

Will Canelo Alvarez’s next fights really be easy?

Terence Crawford is a two-division undisputed champion and the pound-for-pound number one for years while William Scull is the IBF super middleweight champion… despite not having won it in any fight.

When Canelo was defeated by Dmitry Bivol in 2022, in a higher division, his fight record has been disappointing for critics and the public alike. After the trilogy with GGG, the following fights were not to everyone’s liking and when a clash against David Benavidez was demanded, the chosen one was Edgar Berlanga.

Who is the favorite for Mikey Garcia in a possible Canelo vs Benavidez fight?

He confirmed that the fights the Mexican had against Bivol and Berteriev were dangerous, but the truth is that in the hypothetical case of taking this fight he would lean towards David Benavidez. “I was confused between the two. But after seeing Benavidez the last time, I think Benavidez beats him,” in reference to Bandera Roja’s fight against David Morrell.

In the face of this barrage of criticism, Mikey Garcia finally gave credit to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s current opponent, who stressed that he has done so much for the sport that he deserves to choose his opponents.
