Not everything is always smooth sailing, and 2025 has been the most difficult year for Patrick Mahomes in the NFL. Since his second season in the league, when he became the full-time starter, he has been a role model at the quarterback position. But this year was tough both for him and for the Kansas City Chiefs franchise.
For the first time since 2014, the Chiefs missed the playoffs this season. It is also the first time since 2016 that Kansas City has relinquished the AFC West crown. This wasn’t entirely surprising, as the division had been getting stronger with teams like the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers on the rise.
To make matters worse, while fighting for a playoff spot in mid-December against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee, along with reported damage to the lateral collateral ligament (LCL). This complicated his injury even further. Although he hopes to be ready for Week 1 of the next season, his return is still uncertain.
The Chiefs need offensive talent-and they could get someone back
Accustomed to being one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, this season the Chiefs ranked 21st in points per game, averaging 21.3. Mahomes, who played 14 games, faced several challenges, throwing only 22 touchdowns while being intercepted 11 times.
The good news is that, according to betting odds, the Kansas City Chiefs are the favorite (+200) to sign Tyreek Hill, who was released by the Miami Dolphins after four seasons with the team. If this happens, Mahomes and Hill would reunite-two players who had great moments together before Hill went to Miami.
The concern is that Hill suffered a serious knee injury (torn ligaments, including an ACL). However, he is recovering and is eager to return to the field. This will also be his first time entering free agency. While multiple teams are interested, the Chiefs are the favorites.
Since Patrick Mahomes became the starter in 2021, Tyreek Hill has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in three of four seasons. If he returns to the Chiefs, he could provide a major boost to an offense that has been stagnant-although his health remains uncertain due to the injury he suffered.
