For Derek Jeter, Shohei Ohtani is not yet one of the greatest of all time

Shohei Ohtani has revolutionized modern baseball with his unique ability to excel as both a pitcher and a hitter, breaking records and leading the Dodgers to a World Series title

However, for legendary former Yankees player Derek Jeter, it is still too early to place him among the greatest of all time.

Derek Jeter: “He has to do it again”

During a recent interview shared by MLB on FOX, Jeter praised Ohtani’s impact on the game, but was also clear in pointing out that true greatness is measured over time and consistency.

He’s done it all. The only challenge he has now is to do it again, because people are going to expect that from him

These words, although not a direct criticism, ignited the debate among fans and experts. Is Jeter underestimating Ohtani or simply applying the same standard that is demanded of sports legends?

Shohei Ohtani, a phenomenon beyond comparison

Ohtani has been described as a “unicorn” for his ability to dominate both on the mound and at the plate. In his first season with the Dodgers, he became the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single campaign, as well as leading his team to win the World Series.

Despite these achievements, Jeter insists that a historic season is not enough to enter baseball’s Olympus

He’s one of those players you can’t take your eyes off

What defines a ‘greatest of all time’?

For many, Ohtani’s statistics already place him in a special category. He has surpassed marks that not even Babe Ruth achieved, and he has done so in a much more competitive and globalized era. However, Jeter represents a more traditional view of baseball, where longevity, championships and consistency over the years are the true indicators of greatness.

In that sense, his opinion is not necessarily a criticism, but an invitation to patience: wait and see if Ohtani can maintain this level for a decade or more.

Mixed reactions to Derek Jeter’s comments

Social media erupted after Jeter‘s comments. Some fans accused him of being “jealous” or “old-fashioned”, while others backed his stance, arguing that a great season is not enough to surpass legends such as Hank Aaron, Willie Mays or Jeter himself.

Even figures like Alex Rodriguez have shown a more enthusiastic stance towards Ohtani, calling him “the best on the planet” and highlighting his ability to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers on his way to stardom.

Ohtani focused on the present

For his part, Shohei Ohtani has avoided controversy. His focus remains on performance on the field. After a historic season and a record $700 million contract, the Japanese seems more interested in continuing to make history than debating his place in it.

Derek Jeter does not deny Shohei Ohtani’s talent, but he does put into perspective what it means to be “one of the greatest of all time”. For him, greatness is not measured in a single season, but in an entire career. Meanwhile, Ohtani continues to write his legacy, and time will tell if he achieves that legendary status that so many already attribute to him.
