Floyd Mayweather vs. Mike Tyson divides boxing: Robert Garcia and Kalle Sauerland criticise exhibition

The fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford is the headline event that everyone is waiting for in 2025, but another piece of news has shaken the boxing world: Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson will face each other in an exhibition next year. Tyson, 59, comes into the fight after losing to Jake Paul, while Mayweather, 48, has already shared footage of his preparation. While the news has generated noise on social media, not everyone in the industry is convinced.

Robert Garcia laughs at the fight

Renowned trainer Robert Garcia made his position clear: he does not believe that this fight is relevant. “Nobody gives a damn,” he said, claiming that, as there is no official winner, the excitement disappears. He even compared the event to the exhibition between Gervonta Davis and Jake Paul, calling it a mere spectacle with no sporting impact.

For Garcia, the central problem is that this type of confrontation does not contribute anything to professional boxing. While he admitted that people will surely watch it, he insisted that it should not be called a fight. “As long as they call it an exhibition, I’m fine with it,” he said, although he acknowledged that these shows end up becoming a “circus”.

Sauerland also objects

The critical view is not limited to Garcia. Promoter Kalle Sauerland, head of Wasserman, also spoke out against the fight. He described the exhibition as “madness” and questioned the rules under which it will be held: “Tyson with one leg? Floyd with eight-ounce gloves and Tyson with 18?” For Sauerland, the event lacks clarity and seriousness.

Although Mayweather and Tyson are two living legends, the expectation seems lower than expected. For figures such as Garcia and Sauerland, the clash is far from a real contribution to boxing, and rather represents a spectacle designed to generate conversation and money. The question now is whether the public will buy into the idea or dismiss it as just another show.
